J.T. Moore
Birmingham City Councilor | District 4
About J.T.
Birmingham is my home. I was born and raised off Bush Boulevard in Ensley, where community wasn’t just a word—it was a way of life. Neighbors looked out for each other, elders passed down wisdom, and kids like me grew up knowing that success wasn’t just about personal achievement—it was about bringing others along with you.
My grandparents played a significant role in shaping my outlook on life. My grandmother, a dedicated cafeteria worker at Birmingham-Southern College, was known for bringing people together over good food, hosting front-yard cookouts that became neighborhood gatherings. My grandfather, a longtime Greyhound Bus Station employee, exposed me to the broader world through summer road trips, teaching the value of hard work, discipline, and connection. From them, I learned two lessons that have guided me ever since: take care of people, and take pride in what you do.
That spirit of service and responsibility has shaped every step of my journey—from my early days mentoring students to my role as your City Councilor. Before I was elected, I spent over a decade working in youth development, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement, striving to be the bridge between people and the resources they needed to thrive.
As Director of Programs at the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club, I mentored young people, developed programming that prepared them for the future, and trained staff to expand our impact.
At Alabama Possible, I helped students navigate college access and financial aid, even launching the first HBCU College Fair at Woodlawn High School.
With the Woodlawn Foundation, I built partnerships between businesses, schools, and community organizations to bring more investment into our neighborhoods.
As Coordinator for Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham, I connected families with free legal aid and organized expungement clinics, giving residents a second chance at economic mobility.
I’ve always believed that government works best when it is in the trenches with the people it serves. That’s why when I was elected in 2021, I made a commitment to be a Councilor who listens, who fights for real solutions, and who works alongside you—not above you.
